Startups

The Right Document is Better Than a Form Document – Every Time.

FACTS:

Doing startup legal right is almost always about more than just the documents.  Startup companies often have special needs that are not addressed in the standard documents found elsewhere on the web.  We know this, and our documents have been designed with these needs in mind.

Documents, many of which are legal contracts, are not “forms.”  Documents and contracts can be standardized, but even standardized documents and contracts need to fit the needs of the individual company.  Every company is different.

There is no “one-size-fits-all” set of documents that will work for every startup company.  Companies that start in the same place may proceed differently through the startup lifecycle depending upon many factors, including the success of their product or service, the relationships among their founders, and the way they fund their growth.

Starting with the documents and adding the lawyer later is almost like doing the process backwards.

We understand this at Startups at US Legal.com.  We offer the specially-tailored documents and startup-focused legal advice that are largely missing from other document services.  If you need a document in a hurry and don’t have time to talk to a lawyer, our document tools will guide you through the typical legal issues a startup considers when drafting that particular document so you come out with a document that is much more likely to reflect the needs of your startup business.

Whichever level of service you choose, our services are designed for startups.  Even our basic documents reflect a considered approach to startup legal needs.  You will see our focused startup approach in everything from the questions we ask to help you create a document to the recommendations we give.

Who are our services for?

Our services are for startup companies out to create the next new thing, whether it’s a product or a service.  Many companies referred to as “startups” will have or project some kind of repeatable or “scalable” income that comes from a product or business model that leverages technology, a new process, design or material; or a new service or service model.  This new way of doing something can be completely new – never before seen – or it can just be a better mousetrap.  Viable startups are also just as likely to be, or turn out to be, businesses with non-scalable products or business models, often referred to as “lifestyle” businesses, which will not scale or grow rapidly but, instead, turn into companies that will be operated indefinitely by their founders.  Some of these lifestyle are companies that are bootstrapped for a longer period before seeking funding, and some are businesses that are simply not candidates for outside funding for whatever reason.  Our services are designed for both kinds of startup.

This site has resources for startups in the early and developing stages of the startup lifecycle, from idea up to Series A.  Whether your company is in Silicon Valley or Little Rock, Arkansas, these startup resources are for you.

We will continue to add resources to this site, so check back often.  If you need a resource or document you don’t see, be sure to ask.

We know a form document site is not enough.  We’ve been advising startups for a long time.  We are real people on the other side of this site, and it is important to us that entrepreneurs have the legal resources they need to build great companies on a sound legal footing.  That’s why we’re here.

We offer four levels of service:

  1. Documents only, if you know what you need and you just need the document.
  2. Documents only with limited legal assistance, if you know what you need but you need some help figuring out what the documents should say.
  3. Legal Assistance with selecting and preparing standard or modified documents or you need legal advice related to particular documents.
  4. Special assistance because you have unique circumstances that might require “fixing” something that was done before or that otherwise may not fit into anything close to a “standard” document or if you require legal advice on other matters concerning your startup, such as intellectual property, founder disputes, tax matters, labor and employment, OEM agreements, licensing arrangements, general counsel services, etc.
